We are currently open to submissions for our Summer issue!
Deadline is June 15th.
Thank you for your interest, and we hope to have the chance to read your work.


Up the Staircase's artistic vision defined: Our taste leans more towards true confessional writing, although not exclusively. We appreciate writers who do not merely record their emotions on paper, but also place importance on craft and construction. We desire works that are groundbreaking and shocking, while still maintaining a high level of craftsmanship through careful attention to and use of prosody. These works should not only describe events and occurences, but rather explore and examine self-revelations that uncover human truths, creating a close connection with its readers.


Important Guidelines for all Genres:

-We expect authors to follow proper publishing protocol: a given piece should not appear in more than one electronic publication, just as it should not appear in more than one print publication.

-Simultaneous submissions are accepted, just let us know if a piece has been accepted elsewhere ASAP!

-We do not accept previously published work, either online or in print. We do not consider personal blogs as publication, so we will accept that work.

-You may submit only ONCE a quarter. We will not read more material submitted during that reading period. It will be deleted.

-We do not desire profanity for the mere sake of it.

-We are not prudish in regards to content; we enjoy shock, vulgarity and decadence.

-We try to respond to all writers in 4 weeks or less.

Poetry: Please submit 3-5 poems to upthestaircase@gmail.com
Poetry should be well edited, emotive, and written with a unique voice.
Put "Poetry Submission" in the subject line along with the name you wish to be published under. Send your poems in the body of the email, no attachments will be accepted! Please send a brief bio (50 words or less) so that we (and our readers) can learn a little about you. We hold the right to shorten unnecessarily long bios.

Short Stories/Flash Fiction/Prose: Please submit up to 5 fiction pieces to upthestaircase@gmail.com
Fiction should be compelling, surprising, and thoughtful.
Put "Fiction/Prose Submission" in the subject line along with the name you wish to be published under. Send your fiction in the body of the email, no attachments will be accepted! Send a brief bio (50 words or less).
Limit flash fiction to 400 words or less. Keep short stories to 5000 words or less.

Book Reviews/Advertisements:Need A Book Reviewed and Advertised? If you have written a book - of any genre - and would like a review and advertisement of it posted on our website, please send us a brief synopsis and a small excerpt, as well as the length (number of pages) of your book, along with a bio.

If we feel your book is a good match for our audience, we will ask you to send a copy of your book to us. Your book will not be returned. There is a $10 reading fee. Your book and its review will be listed on our web page as a way to help promote your work.
