"Murdering Dreams" by RowanArtC

Repossession: A Litany by Adam Hughes

I was at the poetry reading when the repo man came—

He found me and asked me where my car was—

I told him I didn’t know. He didn’t believe me—

I told him it sat somewhere with a cracked head—

He said he found me because of my Facebook status—

I knew I should have set that to private—

I told him I’d call him later when I found my car—

I thanked him when he left, although I’m not sure why—

I sat back down and my beer danced in its bottle—

He was big, his hands the size of elephant ears—

He knew me from an old bartending job—

I matched his eyes until something else drew them away—

I still haven’t told him that my car is behind a house—

Sitting, half-torn apart, a cracked head—

Me, unable to afford the new engine, the new—

Anything. I won’t give him the location—

My future father-in-law doesn’t need to be bothered—

With the knowledge that I am a fugitive—

A clamorer for grace like a suckling—

Fawn nuzzling the cold mother who no longer notices—

Will there be a day when I won’t have something—

To hide? Will I ever be nakedly known—

And still grasped, a fishhook through the eye—

Firm hands wiggling it free, tossing me back to water—

A kiss, a scar, before the air runs out—

Lord, hear my prayer.

Lord, take my prayer.

Lord, inhabit my prayer.

Lord, hold my prayer.

Lord, breathe my prayer.

Lord, see my prayer.

Lord, carry my prayer.

Lord, fold my prayer.

Lord, hide my prayer.

Lord, quicken my prayer.

Lord, speak my prayer.

Lord, strengthen my prayer.

Lord, keep my prayer.

Lord, repeat my prayer.

Lord, enrich my prayer.

Lord, sustain my prayer.

Lord, whisper my prayer.

Lord, search my prayer.

Lord, honor my prayer.

Lord, remember my prayer.

Lord, be my prayer.

Lord, my prayer.

Lord, prayer.

Lord.

Adam Hughes is the author of four full-length poetry collections, most recently Allow the Stars to Catch Me When I Rise (Salmon Poetry, 2017). He earned his MFA from Randolph College and currently resides in central Virginia where he is an adjunct English professor and amateur rugby player.

RowanArtC feels that the work should speak for itself and invites the viewers to go wild with their imagination. The world within us (random thoughts and emotions) is a rich spring of inspiration for her work.
