"why are you so angry" by Haley King

Allison Hummel | Prediction

Meteorological services will
emit. Exhortations to me, to you

in your long sleeves, to everyone
else along the skidding
edge       and inland too.

Big waves will hook
above our heads and roofs
in a really             threatening froth
of            saline.

I used to say, someone is for sure going to
surf those big waves at the end of the world.
All barrel, it’s all that       we’ll remember.

But now I’m not certain.
Too much depends on too many
things. We might all be shelling
nuts for the ritual plate

without any more time to spend grasp-
ing toward experience.

Clothing the night with prayer to
wake up the day.

And surprised, most of us, to find
another rhythm in struggle,
when the only thing
that still floats    is time

Allison Hummel is based in Los Angeles. Her poetry has recently appeared in Annulet: A Journal of Poetics and JMWW. Recent fiction can be found in Bloodletter Magazine.
