Postcard Placed in the Package I Sent to Mexico by Connie Post
I bought some tangerines
at the farmer’s market today.
I’m sorry I can’t send you more,
but postage just went up again
and all these letters
are getting lost in the mail
I wish you could have seen
how dark the figs were this year
the juice is still lingering
in the back house
of my sovereign mouth
I never told you
when I planted those trees
because I thought your hands
were too kind
for this earth
