Born in 1965 in Los Angeles, Eric Wayne’s formative years took place in the tumultuous climate of the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, Beatlemania, the psychedelic revolution, and then an influx of serial killers, and the cold war with the imminent threat of nuclear obliteration. He has been drawing his entire life, and his earliest visual library was a richly illustrated encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Horror movies which neighbors gave him for his birthday when he was 8 years old. The still images in that book, along with sci-fi movies such as War of the Worlds or The Creature From the Black Lagoon, and the TV series The Outer Limits formed lifelong visual obsessions.
Eric did his undergrad at UCLA, then got his MFA at UC Irvine. However, the strong preference for conceptual art, and against visual art with a vengeance, that he encountered in art school ultimately alienated him from the art world. He became a full-time worker at office jobs, but began experimenting with Photoshop as a new avenue of art-making.
He moved to the opposite coast, where he rode the NY subway for 8 years before leaving America entirely. He has lived in Asia for the last 15 years, and speaks three Asian languages (Chinese, Khmer, and Thai). He never gave up making art, but while living in China, entirely removed from not only the art world, but from Western civilization at all, he began to make art again with a sense of purpose, doing only what he wanted, and hearkening back to his passion for art. His new work combines fine art and illustration, painting and digital art processes, and other seeming opposites like sci-fi and expressionism. His goal is to make new and captivating images for the collective visual imagination. Visit his Website.
