The Loneliest Language
A man shakes his newspaper at the sky
shouts in some language I don't recognise;
the loneliest language in the world.
His words rise up and disappear
unwanted, nobody wants to hear them
nobody even looks at him.
Late night on the Underground a woman
sings some dirge like song.
We sway, and a man in a white shirt
two sizes too big proposes to a woman
in a white top one size too small,
we clap and she declares herself
the happiest girl alive.
Someone gives her a peach to celebrate
producing it like treasure
with a turn of the hand,
a tender thing, a soft skinned fruit.
I look at newspapers folded
like wings of drunken angels at my feet
and think of deforestation.
