ARTIST STATEMENT
Shannon Kernaghan’s work invites viewers to suspend linear thinking and instead perceive her mixed media as a sum of elements, pieces of a puzzle that when reshuffled, evoke personal memories and surprising sensations.
Based on the tricky dynamics of desire and passion, Kernaghan is intrigued by crows, which inspired her project CROW LIFE. The similar appearance of these birds makes it tough to identify female from male and yet crows can recognize individual human faces.
She empowers her subjects with the same unassuming designs as these clever birds. Only through sharing similar façades – women and birds – can they detach from the stereotypical comparison to an ever-shifting ‘beauty scale.’
Paint, draw, forage, destruct and reconstruct, in varied order. Creating visual art from Alberta, Canada, Kernaghan’s narrative supports the concept that art can lead to a change in mindset and can heal through creating bridges.
